Overview
Portbury Docks Storage Facility required an 8,000m2 warehouse platform as part of a £10m development. Given the high-load nature of portside operations, the sub-base quality and compaction performance of the platform were critical to the project’s success.
Project Scope
The project required a stable, high-performing working platform capable of supporting structural build activity and resisting movement under future mechanical load. To protect the finished concrete surface and mitigate post-construction surface failures, particular focus was placed on achieving optimal compaction within the sub-base layer.
To meet these standards, 4,000 tonnes of Type 1 Ecoblend® CA were supplied from Day Aggregates’ Avonmouth depot and laid to a depth of 265mm across the 8,000m² foundation area.
Material Requirements
Having successfully used Ecoblend MA in previous projects, our client chose Ecoblend CA due to its:
- Superior product quality
- Material cost savings
- High performance

3,555 tonnes of IBA
repurposed into IBAA

Sustainability
Over 4,000 tonnes of critical natural material preserved

Material Efficiency
809 tonnes less material required*

Transport Efficiency
Material savings eliminated
82 additional lorry movements
Outcome
This case study illustrates how a large-scale industrial platform can benefit from consistent, high-quality recycled aggregates, even under tight structural performance requirements. The result was a successful foundation installation, with the material described by the customer as “very good quality”.
“Would recommend (Ecoblend) – good quality product at a competitive price. Day Aggregates are very easy to deal with. Would definitely use again.” – Client
